Not only smoked herring, but also cod, salmon and other specialties. And if you're lucky, you can still buy fresh fish at the harbor.
Fairtrade Bornholm
In 2010, Bornholm was named Denmark's first Fairtrade Island. On Bornholm, it is possible to buy various fairtrade products in the island's shops and several workplaces serve fairtrade-labeled coffee to their employees. The Bornholm Regional Municipality works with sustainable development in many ways - including Fairtrade. The Bornholm Regional Municipality thus purchases a number of Fairtrade-labeled products.
In 2020, Bornholm was named the most responsible island in the EU.
There are more than 2,000 inhabited islands in the EU. Of these, Bornholm has received the EU Commission's honor as the most responsible island in 2020.
The “Responsible Island Prize” is the name of the energy prize, which rewards the development of new technology and renewable energy.
Bornholm has distinguished itself by starting the phase-out of coal and oil early. And with limited financial resources available, the island has established renewable energy sources such as solar cells, wind turbines, biomass – as well as making investments in district heating and other innovative technologies.
The result is efficient and reduced energy consumption and large reductions in CO2 emissions, proof that green transition can succeed in practice.
